A programme of art, culture and new infrastructure to reimagine the future of the UK’s biggest council housing estate
Barking & Dagenham Youth Dance (BDYD) created three TikTok Tea Dance Challenges, each set at different levels and catering to all physical abilities and age groups. The dances draw influence from the Becontree Estate itself – looking across historic and current dance styles, whilst imagining future movements and trends.
Staff and volunteers taught participants how to do the dances via TikTok videos. Participants submitted their videos and BDYD created a short film that captured a portrait of a community celebrating 100 years of the Becontree Estate through movement and dance, which was showcased during the Becontree 100 Festival. Using key art forms such as dance, drama and music as a way of developing community cohesion and leadership skills in young people.
