A programme of art, culture and new infrastructure to reimagine the future of the UK’s biggest council housing estate

Arc Theatre

In Our Own Words

Valence Library

17 May – 15 July 2021

In Our Own Words was a creative exploration into the local history of Barking and Dagenham, placing the collected stories and experiences of participants at the heart of the project. Through discussions, interviews, drama, movement, improvisation and storytelling, Arc Theatre created an original piece of Verbatim Theatre – a form of documentary theatre made from real people's words and life experiences. Participants were asked to recall stories, share memories and explore their dreams, hopes and aspirations to provide a full 360-degree perspective of their experiences on the Becontree Estate. In Our Own Words culminated in an ‘open to all’ public performance and a Q&A with the participants and the Arc Theatre creative team.
