A programme of art, architecture and infrastructure to mark the centenary of the UK’s biggest council housing estate

EFG London Jazz Festival

Dagenham Roundhouse and Estate-wide

12 - 21 November 2021

In late 2021 the historic Roundhouse Pub will for the first time play host to part of this year’s EFG London Jazz Festival. Drawing on legacy of the Village Blues Club which saw historic performances at the pub from Pink Floyd, Elton John, Fleetwood Mac and so many others, Barking and Dagenham Council is working with partners Serious to deliver a series of performances and workshops to celebrate our heritage of music, dance and performance on the Becontree Estate.

The EFG London Jazz Festival is the capital’s biggest pan-city music festival, which has long been acclaimed for showcasing a heady mix of talent from around the world to a massive audience, in one of UK’s landmark music events. Widely acknowledged for delivering world-class artists and championing the future generation of emerging stars, the Festival provides both a platform upon which young musicians can inspire, and in turn be inspired by, the depth and variety of the music around them.

Opportunities

Vocal Project

Serious (see below for bio) are looking for talented and motivated vocalists, aged 16-25 and who live in Barking & Dagenham, to audition for a special project for Becontree Forever, in partnership with EFG London Jazz Festival.

They will be hosting an open audition process, where a panel of experts will select 8 vocalists for bespoke one-to-one and group mentoring from a leading artist featuring in the 2021 Jazz Festival. The aim of these sessions is to prepare vocalists for a dedicated showcase within the Jazz Festival, produced by the Festival's expert team, which will be filmed and streamed to audiences across the world.

Dance Project

As a part of Becontree Forever’s wider celebration, the Jazz Festival wants to celebrate the creativity of young people in the area by harnessing the strength of the local dance scene.

Serious want to work with schools, youth groups and dance organisations who engage with passionate young dancers and who are keen to be part of a large-scale project. The project will involve rehearsing over the Summer and Autumn terms, with choreography dictated by each individual group and their dance leaders. Each groups performance will be filmed and premiered with EFG London Jazz Festival.
